Ahoy friend and web-surfer --
Are you a trawler owner or trawler-owner wan-a-be? Do you own a different type of boat but love the trawler lifestyle? MTOA, the Marine Trawler Owners Association, is for you!

MUST YOU OWN A MARINE TRADER TO JOIN?

NO! When this group started, most of our members owned Marine Traders and MTOA meant Marine TRADER Owners Association. However, "time marches on", and currently, most of our members own other types of trawlers. Some even have sailboats or sport fishing boats! To reflect this change, our Board of Directors, with the overwhelming support of our members, voted to change our name to the Marine Trawler Owners Association. Our group is NOT about a specific brand of boat; it's about friendships, rendezvous, cruising and 'messing' around in boats, and doing it with a Trawler Owners' philosophy and outlook. If that describes you, join us!!

How We Started -

Our non-profit, member operated boating club was founded in 1990 by two trawler owners, Captains Mike Creedon and Pete Donnelly. After purchasing Marine Traders and talking to other trawler owners, they thought that getting a group of trawler owners together could be a great idea. So Mike and Pete set out to organize the MTOA and the rest is history.

Interest in the organization was unbelievable right from the beginning. Our association now numbers over 2000 active members, representing over 1000 boats, home ported in 40 different states and several foreign countries. Many of our members do not yet own a boat, but hope to someday.

The goals of the MTOA and its members include the following:
Maintenance and repair problem solving.
Training and education for our captains and first mates.
Ownership and resale of our member vessels.
Activities and social events for our members and guests.
Information exchange and dialogue amongst our membership.
The MTOA magazine, issued quarterly, has over 80 pages stuffed with members' accounts of cruises, problems solved, engine and maintenance tips and other advice. We also issue a Products and Services Directory, a listing of Member Port Captains, a list of Participating Marine Facilities offering member discounts, and a searchable CD with magazine issues starting with Issue #1. The members' section of this website contains links to member's cruise Blogs and our ListServ, where you can get quick feedback on the issues that concern you the most, from fuel prices on the ICW to sources for needed equipment and repairs. We have Port Captains all over the country who will gladly help visiting members with local information, a ride to the grocery and any other needs.

MTOA currently holds two national rendezvous (northern and southern) and numerous regional rendezvous around the country. The Northern (Chesapeake Bay) and Southern (South Carolina through Florida) events are attended by upwards of 200 boaters and more than 60 trawlers. Recent Rendezvous seminars included Anchoring Techniques, 1st Mates Roundtable, Engine Room Inspections, Women's Hands On Maneuvering, Internet Underway, and This Old Boat.

Our Regional groups (New England, Great Lakes, West Coast, Northern Chesapeake, Southern Chesapeake, North Carolina, Northeast Florida and West Coast Florida) hold local gatherings and cruises throughout the year. We're continually adding new Regional groups. It's great to have boating friends everywhere you go!
